Happy Birthday Drawing

So, I've got a birthday coming up on November 7th. The last one I'll have before I hit the next decade mark, so I'd kind of like it to be a big deal. This year, instead of a gift, I told my husband I wanted TIME. So, I am taking the last week of our vacation club for this year and going to Park City for a week long writing retreat with a few of my friends. I am VERY excited and plan to come home having written at least HALF of The Armor of Light.

But since not all of you fine folks will be able to attend with me, I'm going to steal an idea from my dear friend Ali and have a drawing here on my blog. Leave a comment on any post between now and November 14th (a week after my birthday) about a favorite memory of or about me, or something good you've seen in me, and on November 14th I will do a drawing or two . . . or three . . . for some of MY favorite things. I'm not sure what those things will be yet, but I'll let you know as the time gets closer. In the meantime, be creative. I know you've got some fun stories out there, happy memories we've shared. Let me hear them. I want to celebrate all the good the last 39 years have brought to my life instead of remember that next year is the big 4-0. Oh, and you can enter as many times as you have memories to share!

And thanks, to all of you, for being such great friends and supporters. May your own birthdays bring you as much joy as I hope this one will for me.

Quote of the Day: "Writers aren't exactly people.... they're a whole bunch of people trying to be one person."

Well, let me see--where to begin? Kay did say we can enter as many times as we can, right? It's going to be a fierce competition I bet!

ONE of my favorite memories with Karen is when we cooked dinner together in her kitchen--that was so very sweet!

Another memory is when she used polarity on my twisted ankle and how caring she was and concerned for me!

PS--I believe in it, too, Kay!

Another is when she drove straight from Blanding to my house and was still perky enough to spend more of her precious time with me!

I really enjoyed when we spent late into the wee hours of the morning showing off our talents--her with her poetry and mine with my art.

Kay, you are such a literary artist with your poetry!

I loved it how she decided to come to my house on her Movie-Saturdays and felt just as regrouped as if she had done her movie day!

A memorable event was when she trusted me enough to confide in me regarding many personal things--I am honored to be the keeper of such precious things!

It warms my heart how I was able to comfort her during one of her lowest and how she turned to me as well

another favorite--one in which I shall never forget--is when angel mommy visited me.

the last one, i don't want to be a hog here, is going to the bountiful temple with Kay--how beautiful an experience!

PS--Kay, I assure you there are a whole many more, but you know...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Wow! It's a midnight party in here.

Park City sounds like an awesome way to celebrate. I haven't been there in years, but they have some of the best restaurants. Mmmm.

I used to live near the Bountiful Temple. It's beautiful inside.

Happy Birthday in advance. I'm a new lurker, so I'll just enjoy learning about you.

Oh and I LOVED your quote of the day!

One of my favorite memories of you Karen is when we were at Shannas and you were thowing fruit all over the kitchen it made you human to me and I felt much more comfortable knowing that you were just a writer like me.

Have fun in Park City. *Jealous*

Happy, happy birthday, Karen! Favorite memories? Hm. We've had some really awesome chats over the last few years. Oh, here's one. I have a very fond memory from last year's Storymaker conference, when we sat at the AI gathering and chatted about massage, healing stones, and wolves.

I also remember us planning to ride to St. George together for an LUW conference, but for some reason you ended up not being able to go. =( Another time.

One of my memories was on the trampoline, late at night, looking at the stars and talking about life. A lot of deep conversations that truly felt unique and heartfelt. You gave me a moment to remember what it felt like to be understood--to be friends of the most rare kind. Thank you for that.

I'm going to share all my memories/good things in one comment. It will just make my life easier. :D

Your birthday Fantasy Fiesta Mystery Dinner (I added fiesta because I like alliteration). And my husband being a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon named Teesoro. Gas station coincidence? I think not.

Lunches at Rubio's

When you got your hat name and you wrote a beautiful poem about it.

Red Iguana - mmm...

Sharing all the things we cook & bake with each other.

Throwing you a birthday fiesta and inviting Shanna & Jewel who probably thought I was loonier than a bat.

Bountiful Chinese (Notice how a few of these are food related? No wonder the Wii Fit tells me I'm obese! I can focus on nothing else!)

Speaking of food. VEGGIE SANDWICHES!!!

And my favorite(s)...

...laughing so hard you have to run to the bathroom! Maybe I'll buy you some depends for your b-day this year. ;)

I LOVE YOU!!!

The non-sleepover sleepover at your sister's house. :-)

Our lunches together.

LDS Storymakers every year.

*I know I could have made several posts, but I am button lazy today!*

Happy Advanced birthday!

Okay...that last post went under the wrong account, so I'll try again!

Well...I'm a relatively new mostly-lurker, too, but I can certainly say what I admire about you from getting to know you a little better at the last WIFYR conference: your enthusiasm for writing, your optimism in forging ahead with a vision, and your incredible empathy.

You're an inspiration! Thank you, and Happy Birthday!

:)

There are many. How can I begin? Well, here's a few.

Walking, talking, packing up your mother's things, Bajio dates, veggie sandwich lunches, support hugs (not support hose), reading manuscripts, brainstorming sessions, writing dates, your unfailing encouragement.

Happy Birthday!!!

Did I say *your sister*? I meant Shari's :-).

I remember the year of the Storymaker's conference in the Provo Library. I had the most humongous headache, and you massaged my shoulders and made it go away. Bless you!

And remeber the last Storymaker's conference when they were annoucing the contest winners? When they announced New Timber had won the grand prize, the whole room erupted with cheering and applause. We all knew you really deserved to win, because your writing is so good, and because you are so good.

I loved my week at BYU WIFYR in the Hickmans' class with you and all those other fabulous writers and wonderful people. And eating lunch with fantasy-folks--what could be better?

Happy Birthday! You're not so old, really. I'm turning (quite a bit) older than that three days before your birtday. So happy birthday to me, too!

Karen, I don't know you well--I'm not sure if you even remember me-- but I was so impressed with you at Storymakers. Watching you interact with others, and during the few seconds I had the privilege of talking with you, I loved how your spirit radiated genuine love and concern for others. You are truly a choice daughter of our Father in Heaven.

Best wishes for a very happy birthday!

Lori, of course I remember you! I've admired your work for a long time and it was an honor and pleasure to stand in line with you in the bookstore and visit for a few minutes. I'm thrilled that you remembered ME!

HUGS to you all! this is the best birthday present EVER!

Karen, your 39th birthday should be looked at as a doorway into the beautiful 40s. It is something to look forward to, but you need to be warned that as you step over that threshold, the years go by faster so every minute should be savored and used wisely. In the meantime, enjoy the 39th and live it to the fullest.

Yesterday was my daughter's birthday also. Nov. 7 is a good day to be born. I don't know you much so I can't enter your contest but... I want to wish you the best year ever and many more. Happy year to you!

I can't remember how long ago it was--though it wasn't too long--your name came up in a conversation I was having with Josi Kilpack. She said, and I quote, "she's a great writer."

Karen,

You have a way of unconditionally loving and caring about all those around you and making each of us feel unique and special. I feel privileged to call you my friend. Happy Birthday.

Karen - you're just a young chick. There's nothing bad about life beyond 39. Go for it.

I remember meeting you at Storymakers back in 2006, and you later read the first draft of one of my books (which is now being submitted). You were the first one to indicate that my ending was complete crap :-)

Another of my favorite memories of you was spending time together at Heather's book signing!
